A forest inside the city. Vetal Tekdi is a forested ridge of about 10.5 km² on Pune's western side, rising to about 800 m. Early mornings are its best hours: cool air, long views and birdsong, before the traffic noise rises from the roads below.
The walk. From the Chaturshringi temple side on Senapati Bapat Road, your guide leads you up forest paths to the ridge and on to the summit, where the small Vetal temple and a forest department viewpoint look over the city. Then you follow the ridge before descending. Expect about two hours of walking on dirt trails, with a few steep, rocky sections.
Breakfast. Back at the bottom, you sit down to a Maharashtrian breakfast at a local eatery: poha, upma or misal with tea or coffee.
Good to know. This is a moderate city trek, not a mountain hike: no special gear is needed, just trainers or walking shoes and water. For a full fort day, see our Sinhagad Fort and Zapurza day trip.
