About Leaning Tower of Pisa
Work on Pisa's bell tower began in 1173, and it started to tilt within a few years as the soft ground gave way. Builders carried on for almost two centuries, angling the upper floors to compensate. Engineers closed it from 1990 to 2001 to reduce the lean, and it is now monitored and stable.
It shares Piazza dei Miracoli with the Cathedral, the round Baptistery and the Camposanto cemetery, all in white marble. A climb of 251 worn steps spirals up to the bell chamber, and you feel the slope underfoot.
