Gaudí, Gothic stone and the sea

Barcelona packs a lot into a small space. In the Gothic Quarter, a cathedral cloister keeps 13 white geese, and Picasso's early work fills five medieval palaces on one narrow street. A short walk north, Passeig de Gràcia shows off two Gaudí houses a few blocks apart, while the Sagrada Família's new central tower now tops the skyline at 172.5 metres. Plan around the city's rhythm. Book timed entries for the Gaudí sites, as slots sell out in busy months. Lunch runs from about 14:00 and dinner rarely starts before 20:30. The Picasso Museum closes on Mondays, and churches ask for covered shoulders. The metro reaches almost everything, and Montserrat, Girona and the Costa Brava are each within about 90 minutes.
