About this experience

  • Four Tuscan stops in one day: Pisa, a Chianti winery, San Gimignano and Siena
  • Guided walk round Piazza dei Miracoli, with time for photos of the Leaning Tower
  • Winery lunch with a tasting of three wines; soft drinks for under-18s
  • Free time among San Gimignano's towers, then a guided walk to Siena's Piazza del Campo

A long, full day. The coach leaves Piazzale Montelungo at 07:30 and is back at about 20:00, with around five hours of driving. A tour leader is with you all day, and local guides lead the walks in Pisa and Siena. The order: Pisa in the morning, lunch in Chianti, San Gimignano after lunch and Siena until early evening.

Pisa. A guided walk of about an hour takes in the Cathedral's marble arcades, the round Baptistery, the Camposanto and the Tower, begun in 1173 and leaning about 4 degrees, followed by a little free time. The Tower climb isn't included. The Cathedral opens to visitors at 10:00; its free fixed-time passes are handed out at the ticket office, in limited numbers.

Chianti and San Gimignano. Lunch is at a family-run winery in the Chianti countryside, with a tasting of three wines; under-18s get soft drinks. Look out for the black rooster on Chianti Classico bottles, once the emblem of the medieval Chianti League. Then comes free time in San Gimignano, where 14 of some 72 medieval tower-houses still stand.

Siena. The day ends with a guided walk through Siena's medieval streets to Piazza del Campo, the sloping brick shell split into nine sections below the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia, then on to the cathedral square. Going inside the cathedral isn't included; on Sundays and religious holidays it opens only from 13:30.
