Vrindavan lies on the west bank of the Yamuna in the Braj country of Uttar Pradesh, where Hindus believe Krishna spent his childhood. Temples fill the town, from the 16th-century red sandstone of Govind Dev to the white marble of Prem Mandir, opened in 2012. Pilgrims walk the parikrama path around the old town, and each evening lamps are offered to the river at Keshi Ghat. Plan around the temple day. Most shrines open early, close from about noon to 16:00 and reopen into the evening. Dress modestly, expect to leave your shoes at the door, and keep glasses and phones away from the monkeys. Mathura, revered as Krishna's birthplace, is about 10 km south; Agra is about 1.5 hours by road.
