About this experience
- A licensed local guide walks you round the whole square: Baptistery, Cathedral, Camposanto and Tower
- Inside the Cathedral for Giovanni Pisano's marble pulpit and Cimabue's apse mosaic
- Why the Tower leans, and how engineers steadied it while it was closed from 1990 to 2001
- Small group of up to 20 with headsets; add a reserved Tower climb and the other monuments (ages 8+)
The walk. Your guide leads you round Piazza del Duomo, better known as Piazza dei Miracoli and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. You start at the Baptistery, begun in 1152 and the largest in Italy, where Galileo was baptised, then take in the Cathedral's marble arcades and the Camposanto, the monumental cemetery founded in 1277. The walk ends below the Tower, with the story of why the soft ground gave way.
Inside the Cathedral. Entry is free, and your guide takes you in for Giovanni Pisano's carved pulpit (1302–1310), Cimabue's mosaic of St John in the apse and the lamp of the Galileo legend; the lamp he is said to have watched swing is now kept in the Camposanto. The Cathedral asks guided groups of six or more to use headsets, so everyone gets one.
Add the Tower and monuments. With the Tower option, we reserve your climb for about 30 minutes after the walk, time enough to leave bags in the free cloakroom. It's 251 steps and about 30 minutes, up a tower about 56 metres high that leans about 4 degrees. You also get the Baptistery, Camposanto and both museums, on your own the same day. Ages 8+ only.
Good to know. The walk is mostly outdoors on flat ground. The Cathedral opens to visitors at 10:00. During Mass and services, mostly on Sundays and religious holidays, visitors are limited to part of the church and guides may not explain, so the interior visit may be shorter on those days.

- The Leaning Tower20 minThe walk ends at the foot of the Tower, by Bonanno Pisano's bronze Porta di San Ranieri: why it began to lean, how the builders compensated and the works that steadied it. With the Tower option, your slot is about 30 minutes later.
