The story
Work began in 1403 on the site of the Almohad great mosque. The Giralda began as the mosque's minaret; in the 16th century Hernán Ruiz added the Renaissance belfry, and the Giraldillo, a bronze figure of victorious faith about 4 metres tall, turns at the top.
UNESCO listed the cathedral as a World Heritage Site in 1987, together with the Alcázar and the Archivo de Indias.
