Palaces, patios and long evenings
Seville's old centre is built around three monuments UNESCO listed together in 1987: the Cathedral, raised on the site of the city's great mosque and still crowned by its minaret, the Giralda; the Royal Alcázar, a palace that Spain's kings still use; and the Archivo de Indias between them. A few minutes away, the Santa Cruz quarter's lanes lead to noble houses such as the Casa de Pilatos and the Palacio de las Dueñas, and the Setas de Sevilla's wooden walkways look out over the rooftops. Plan around the heat and the hours. Summer afternoons are very hot, so start early and keep the middle of the day for indoor visits. Lunch runs from about 14:00 and dinner rarely starts before 21:00. The Cathedral and the Alcázar sell timed tickets, and the Alcázar prints each visitor's name on the ticket, so bring the ID you booked with. Córdoba is about 45 minutes away by high-speed train.
