The story

Abd al-Rahman I began the great mosque of Córdoba in 785, when the city was the capital of al-Andalus. His successors extended it three times, until some 850 columns of marble, jasper and granite carried its double arches. Al-Hakam II added the mihrab in the 960s, faced with mosaics made with craftsmen sent from Byzantium.

After Córdoba passed to Castile in 1236 the mosque became a church, and from 1523 a Renaissance cathedral was raised in its centre. UNESCO listed the Mosque-Cathedral in 1984 and extended the listing to the historic centre in 1994. The Roman bridge, much rebuilt over the centuries, has crossed the Guadalquivir since the 1st century BC.
