The story

The pueblos blancos, the white towns, grew up on the hills between Seville and the coast, many of them frontier strongholds between Christian Castile and the Nasrid kingdom of Granada until the late 15th century. Whitewash kept the houses cool and clean, and gave the region its name.

Ronda stands on a plateau cut in two by the gorge of the Guadalevín. The Puente Nuevo, finished in 1793 after decades of work, joins the old Moorish town to the newer Mercadillo quarter, nearly 100 metres above the river. Its bullring, opened in 1785 by the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda, is one of the oldest in Spain.
