The story
Flamenco grew up in Andalusia from the meeting of Gitano, Andalusian and older musical traditions, and in 2010 UNESCO added it to the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. It rests on cante, the song; toque, the guitar; and baile, the dance, held together by compás, the rhythmic cycle, with palmas (handclaps) and calls from the stage.
Seville is one of its capitals. Across the river, Triana was home to generations of flamenco families, and the city's tablaos keep the art going every night. Much of each show is shaped in the moment, so no two evenings are quite the same.
