About Girona Old Town

Girona sits about 100 km north-east of Barcelona, where the Onyar river divides the newer town from the old. The riverside houses are painted ochre, rust and cream, best seen from the red iron Pont de les Peixateries Velles, built by Gustave Eiffel's company in 1877.

Uphill, the Call is a tight web of stepped lanes and one of Europe's best-kept medieval Jewish quarters. The cathedral, at the top of a broad Baroque stairway, has a Gothic nave 23 metres wide, the widest in the world. Sections of the old city walls can be walked for views over the rooftops.

Know before you go

  • The old town is hilly, with many steps and cobbles
  • Cathedral entry is a separate paid ticket
  • Many small shops close for a few hours after lunch
  • The wall walk has uneven stone steps
