Hills, river light and fado
Lisbon spreads over steep hills above the wide mouth of the Tagus. In Belém, the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, listed together by UNESCO in 1983, recall the age when ships left this shore for India. Across town, São Jorge Castle crowns the hill over Alfama, the city's oldest quarter, whose lanes and viewpoints tram 28E climbs on its way past the cathedral. Fado, the city's song, has been on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage since 2011. Plan around a few rules. The Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower close on Mondays and sell timed tickets that often run out, so book ahead. The Pena Palace in Sintra lets visitors in only at the time on their ticket. Lisbon runs an hour behind Paris and Madrid, and its cobbled hills are easier in comfortable shoes.
