About Tossa de Mar Vila Vella

Tossa's walled old town, the Vila Vella, went up in the early 13th century to keep pirates out. It is the only fortified medieval town still standing on the Catalan coast, and it has been a protected monument since 1931.

Walk in through the gate under the clock tower and climb cobbled lanes past houses built into the walls themselves. At the top, a lighthouse stands where the castle once did, and the path along the ramparts looks down over the main beach and the bay.

Know before you go

  • Steep cobbled lanes; not suitable for wheelchairs
  • Little shade on the ramparts in summer
  • Free to enter; no ticket needed
  • Pack swimwear if you fancy a dip in season
