The story
A Romanesque cathedral was consecrated here on 18 November 1058. Its Gothic successor was begun on 1 May 1298 under Bishop Bernat Pelegrí and King James II of Aragon, and was almost complete by the mid-15th century; the cloister was finished in 1448.
The front stayed a plain wall from 1417 until the late 19th century, when Manuel Girona paid for the façade and side towers to plans by Josep Oriol Mestres. His children completed the dome in 1913.
Saint Eulàlia, by tradition a girl of 13, was martyred in 304 and lies in a marble sarcophagus of 1339 in the crypt. Tradition also links the 13 white geese of the cloister to her age.
