The story
The museum opened on 9 March 1963 as the Sabartés Collection, in the Gothic Palau Aguilar. Jaume Sabartés, Picasso's friend and secretary since 1935, gave most of the first works. It later spread into 4 more palaces on the same street: Baró de Castellet in 1970, Meca in 1982, and Finestres and Casa Mauri in 1999.
Picasso himself made several gifts to the city, among them his Las Meninas series of 1957: 58 works that rework Velázquez's painting, the only complete series of his kept in one institution. Today the collection holds more than 4,000 works, mostly from 1890 to 1917.
