The story
The walk starts at Santa Maria del Mar, begun in 1329 and finished in just 54 years under the master builders Berenguer de Montagut and Ramon Despuig. The bastaixos, the port's dockworkers, gave their work alongside carpenters and glaziers. In 1936, at the start of the Civil War, the church was set on fire.
A few streets away, the Born market opened on 28 November 1876 in an iron hall designed by Josep Fontserè, the first large cast-iron building in Barcelona. It closed in 1971. Beneath it lie streets and houses of the Ribera quarter as they stood in 1714, when the city surrendered to Philip V's troops on 11 September.
