About Uffizi Gallery
Giorgio Vasari began the Uffizi in 1560 as offices for Cosimo I de' Medici; 'uffizi' simply means offices. The Medici later filled the top-floor corridors with paintings and antique statues, and the U-shaped building now holds their collection of Italian art from Giotto to Caravaggio.
The names people come for: Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, Leonardo's Annunciation, Michelangelo's Doni Tondo, Titian's Venus of Urbino and Caravaggio's Medusa. Windows at the river end of the corridors frame the Arno and the Ponte Vecchio.
