About this experience
- Michelangelo's David up close, with the story of the block other sculptors abandoned
- The unfinished Prisoners, still half-held in their marble
- Giambologna's full-size plaster model for the Rape of the Sabine Women
- Reserved entry time and headsets, so you hear every word
What you'll see. Your guide starts in the Hall of the Colossus with Giambologna's plaster model for the Rape of the Sabine Women, then walks you down the Hall of the Prisoners to the David. Expect the story behind the statue: the block other sculptors gave up on, the three years of carving, the move indoors in 1873 and why the head and hands look oversized up close.
After the David. The tour continues to the Gipsoteca, a hall of 19th-century plaster models by Lorenzo Bartolini, and to Florentine gold-ground altarpieces. When it ends you can stay inside as long as you like and go back to the David on your own.
How it works. You meet your guide 15 minutes before your entry time. The museum issues tickets in each visitor's name, so we need everyone's full name at booking, and staff may check ID. Groups use headsets, as the museum requires for groups of six or more.
Good to know. The Accademia has no cloakroom: backpacks, helmets and bags larger than 40 × 30 × 18 cm aren't allowed in, so travel light. There's a metal-detector check at the entrance.
