About this ticket
The cloister Manuel I raised in Belém as the voyages to India began, the jewel of the Manueline style, with the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Camões in the church beside it.
- Walk both floors of the cloister, carved with armillary spheres and the royal arms
- Find Fernando Pessoa's tomb in the cloister's west wing
- See where Vasco da Gama's crews kept vigil before sailing for India in 1497
- Add Belém Tower, a short walk away along the gardens, on the same day
What you'll see
- The cloister: two storeys of carved stone arcades, the heart of the visit
- Fernando Pessoa's tomb: the poet's resting place, in the cloister's west wing
- Church of Santa Maria: a single vault on slender octagonal pillars, with the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões; it keeps its own hours
- South portal: carved like a reliquary, crowned by the Virgin of Belém and the Archangel Michael
- Belém Tower: the riverside fortress of 1514–1519, with the Belém Tower option

The story
Manuel I founded the monastery at the start of the 16th century on the site of the chapel where Vasco da Gama's crews prayed before sailing on 7 July 1497. Diogo de Boytac led the first works and João de Castilho took over in 1517, carving the Manueline style, Portugal's blend of late Gothic and Renaissance, into every surface.
UNESCO listed the monastery with Belém Tower in 1983. It holds the tombs of kings Manuel I, João III and Sebastião, Cardinal Henrique, Vasco da Gama, Camões and Fernando Pessoa.
