The story
In 1838 Ferdinand II, the 'King-Artist', bought the ruins of a monastery Manuel I had founded in 1503. Under Baron von Eschwege's supervision it grew into a palace of Romanticism, mixing Manueline and Moorish references with the king's own taste.
Queen Amélia was staying at Pena when the Republic was declared on 5 October 1910. UNESCO listed the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, with Pena at its heart, in 1995.
