Carvalho Monteiro's dream estate in Sintra, built by the set designer Luigi Manini in the late 1800s: walk down the spiral Initiation Well, follow the tunnels to a grotto, then the gardens, chapel and palace.

Good to know
- Hours
- October–March 10:00–18:30, April–September 9:00–19:30; last entry 17:30. The palace and chapel close 30 minutes before the gardens. Closed 1 January and 24, 25 and 31 December.
- Your time
- Enter at the time on your ticket or up to an hour after it.
- One-way routes
- The Initiation Well is walked downwards only and the tunnels lead on to the Eastern Grotto; the palace route is one-way too.
- Ages
- Under-6s go in free with an adult: the child price covers the audio guide. Under-4s go free. Under-15s must be with an adult on the estate's uneven ground.
The story
António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro (1848–1920) had the estate built in the late 1800s by Luigi Manini (1848–1936), an Italian architect and set designer, as an eclectic mix of Manueline, Renaissance, medieval and classical styles.
Regaleira is part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, which UNESCO listed in 1995.
