About Churchill War Rooms

Beneath government offices on King Charles Street, a warren of basement rooms became the nerve centre of Britain's war from 1939. Churchill's War Cabinet met here 115 times, and staff worked, ate and slept below ground through the Blitz.

When the war ended in August 1945, the Map Room lights were switched off and the door locked, with maps and pins left in place. Today you see that room, the Cabinet Room, Churchill's bedroom and the tiny Transatlantic Telephone Room disguised as a private lavatory. The Churchill Museum alongside tells the story of his whole life.
