- Hours
- Monday–Saturday 8:30–16:30, last entry 16:00; Dome Galleries 9:30–16:15. No sightseeing on Sundays. Some days close early for services.
- Getting in
- Visitors enter at the west end; step-free entry is at the North Transept. Only small bags, and all are searched.
- Bags
- Maximum 45 × 30 × 25 cm, including wheels, handles and pockets. There's no cloakroom.
- The climb
- Stairs only, no lift. Under-18s climb with an adult. If you stay below, the guide shows a video fly-through of the galleries.
- Free tours
- Free 20–30 minute highlights tours in English usually run 11:00–15:00, booked on the day at the Guiding Desk.
The story
St Paul's was founded in 604. The Great Fire, which began in Pudding Lane on 2 September 1666, reached the medieval cathedral 2 days later and left it a ruined shell. Christopher Wren was appointed architect in 1673, and the first stone of his new cathedral was laid on 21 June 1675.
Parliament declared the cathedral complete on 25 December 1711. Wren died in 1723 and is buried in the crypt; a Latin inscription placed by his son reads 'Reader, if you seek a monument, look about you'. The building came through the Blitz, including the raid of 29 December 1940.

- Bags must be no bigger than 45 × 30 × 25 cm, and there's no cloakroom.
- The galleries are stairs only; not advised if you have heart, breathing or mobility problems or dislike heights.
- Under-18s need an adult with them in the Dome Galleries.
- Last sightseeing entry is 16:00; the galleries open from 09:30.
- Infants (0–5) go free; bring ID for children (6–17) in case it's checked.
