What you'll see. Guernica hangs on the second floor of the Sabatini Building, with Picasso's studies for it and Dora Maar's photographs of the work in progress close by. Around it, the collection runs from the late 19th century to today, with strong rooms on Cubism, Surrealism and the years of the Spanish Civil War.
Guernica's story. Picasso painted it in 1937 for the Spanish Republic's pavilion at the Paris World's Fair, after the bombing of the Basque town of Gernika. He asked that it not come to Spain until democracy returned; it arrived in 1981 and has hung here since 1992.
