A long, full day. This trip pairs two UNESCO World Heritage cities in about 11.5 hours. Toledo lies about 70 km south of Madrid and Segovia about 90 km north-west, so expect around four and a quarter hours on the coach in total. Time at each stop is fixed, with free time in Toledo and a lunch break in Segovia.
Toledo. Once the capital of Visigothic Spain and for centuries home to Christians, Jews and Muslims, Toledo stands on a rocky hill wrapped on three sides by the Tagus. Your guide leads you through the Jewish quarter, past the synagogues of Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito, to San Juan de los Reyes, built by the Catholic Monarchs with chains of freed captives on its walls, and on to the cathedral, begun in 1226. El Greco lived here from 1577 until his death in 1614.
Segovia. About two hours north, over the Guadarrama mountains, Segovia sits some 1,000 metres up. Its Roman aqueduct crosses Plaza del Azoguejo on 167 arches of granite blocks held together without mortar, and it carried water into the city until 1973. After lunch, your guide walks you up to the Plaza Mayor and the cathedral, begun in 1525, and out to the Alcázar, where Isabella took refuge before she was proclaimed queen in 1474.
Good to know. It is a long day with steep, cobbled streets in both cities, so wear comfortable shoes. Monument entries are not included: you see the cathedrals, synagogues and the Alcázar from outside with your guide, and can use free time to go inside one. Lunch is not included either.
