The day. Your coach leaves central Milan at 08:00 and follows the eastern, Lecco branch of the lake to Varenna, about 1 hour 30 minutes away. On the way your guide shares the lake's story, from Roman villas to the silk trade that made Como rich.
Varenna. Walk the lakeside path past the small harbour and pastel houses, with time to visit the gardens of Villa Monastero (ticket not included) or simply sit by the water with a coffee.
Bellagio. A boat crossing of about 15 to 20 minutes brings you to Bellagio. Your guide shows you the stepped lanes and lakefront, then you have free time for lunch, shopping or the Villa Melzi gardens, which are open until the end of October.
Good to know. The boat ride uses the public ferry between Varenna and Bellagio, with tickets included. Ferry timetables are reduced outside summer, so the order of stops can change. You're back in Milan at about 18:30.
