The story
Victor Laloux, chosen in 1898, built the Gare d'Orsay for the 1900 World's Fair, and the station opened on 14 July 1900. From 1939 main-line trains stopped using it, and it served only the suburbs.
On 20 October 1977, at the initiative of President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, the state decided to make it a museum of the years 1848 to 1914. The ACT-Architecture group converted the building; President François Mitterrand inaugurated it on 1 December 1986, and it opened to the public on 9 December 1986.
