The story

In 1670 Louis XIV ordered a royal home for old and wounded soldiers, and the first residents, most of them veterans of the Thirty Years' War, moved in in October 1674. Libéral Bruant led the building work until Jules Hardouin-Mansart took over in 1676, and the king inaugurated the Dome church in 1706.

In 1840 King Louis-Philippe had Napoleon's body brought back from Saint Helena, where he had been buried since 1821. Visconti dug out the crypt, and the emperor was laid to rest on 2 April 1861. The Musée de l'Armée was created in 1905 by merging the artillery museum and the historical army museum.
