The story
Pierre Aubert de Fontenay, a salt-tax farmer and protégé of Nicolas Fouquet, built the house to designs by Jean Boullier de Bourges and moved in late in 1659. Parisians called it the Hôtel Salé, the 'salty house'. After his fall in 1663 it passed to creditors and later housed the Venetian embassy.
The City of Paris bought the house in 1964 and it was listed as a historic monument in 1968. After Picasso died in 1973, his heirs gave works to the state in lieu of inheritance tax, in 1979 and 1990, and the museum opened in October 1985 after a renovation by Roland Simounet.
