The story
Jean Aubert designed the Hôtel Biron, built in 1732. When Rodin found it in 1908 it was almost abandoned; he rented four rooms on the ground floor, then took over the whole house from 1911.
In 1916 Rodin gave the state his works, drawings, antiquities and the rights to cast his bronzes, and the state bought the house to make it his museum. He died in 1917, and the Musée Rodin opened on 4 August 1919. The Gates of Hell went into the garden in 1920.
