About Shaniwar Wada

Bajirao I laid the foundation of Shaniwar Wada on 10 January 1730, and the palace was finished in 1732. For almost a century it was the seat of the Peshwas. Narayanrao Peshwa was murdered here in 1773, and in 1818 Bajirao II surrendered to the British.

A fire in February 1828 burned for seven days and destroyed the mansion inside. What remains are the fortified walls and bastions, the Delhi Darwaza with its iron-spiked doors, the plinths of the old halls and the Hazari Karanje fountain.
