Abd al-Rahman III ordered a fortress here in 913. After the Castilian conquest of 1248 the kings of Castile rebuilt it, and from 1356 Pedro I raised the Mudéjar palace around the Patio de las Doncellas and the Salón de Embajadores. Charles V married Isabella of Portugal at the Alcázar in 1526, and the palace is still a residence of the Spanish royal family.
Beyond the palaces, the Gothic Palace keeps the Salón de los Tapices and the vaulted Baños de Doña María de Padilla, and the gardens run from the Renaissance terraces of the Jardín de las Damas to the English Garden of the early 20th century. With the Cathedral and the Archivo de Indias it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
