About Museu Picasso

Opened in 1963, the museum holds one of the largest collections of Picasso's early work anywhere. You watch a teenager become a painter: academic studies from A Coruña and Barcelona, then Blue Period canvases, all in Gothic palaces linked by courtyards and stone stairs.

The high point comes later. In 1957 Picasso painted 58 variations on Velázquez's Las Meninas, and in 1968 he gave the whole series to the museum. Seeing them together, room after room, shows how far he could push a single picture.
