About Galleria dell'Accademia

Michelangelo carved the David between 1501 and 1504 from a block of Carrara marble that other sculptors had given up on. It stood outside Palazzo Vecchio until 1873, when it was moved indoors for protection; a copy now stands in the piazza.

Here it rises under a skylit tribune designed for it. The approach is part of the effect: the Hall of the Prisoners, where unfinished figures meant for Pope Julius II's tomb still seem to push out of the stone. Gold-ground altarpieces, a hall of 19th-century plaster casts and a collection of musical instruments fill the other rooms.
