About Pitti Palace

The banker Luca Pitti began this palace in the 15th century. In the mid-1500s Eleonora di Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de' Medici, bought it, and it became the main home of the grand dukes and later of the Savoy kings of Italy.

The Palatine Gallery hangs Raphael, Titian and Rubens frame to frame under gilded ceilings, as the princes liked them. The Royal Apartments, Gallery of Modern Art and Museum of Fashion and Costume fill other wings. Behind, the Boboli Gardens climb the hill with grottoes, fountains, an amphitheatre and an Egyptian obelisk.
