Things to do at Cabo da Roca

Guided tours

About Cabo da Roca

Cabo da Roca is the most westerly point of mainland Europe, in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, with cliffs about 140 metres high over the Atlantic. A stone cross near the lighthouse carries Luís de Camões's line from The Lusiads: 'Onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa', where the land ends and the sea begins.

The lighthouse, ordered in 1758 and working since 1772, is the second oldest on Portugal's coast. Since July 2026 its courtyard and a new interpretation centre are open to visitors.

Know before you go

  • Stay well back from the cliff edge: the cliffs are about 140 metres high
