About Jerónimos Monastery

Manuel I founded the monastery in Belém at the start of the 16th century, on the site of a chapel where Vasco da Gama's crews kept vigil before sailing for India on 7 July 1497. Diogo de Boytac led the first works and João de Castilho took over in 1517. The result is the masterpiece of the Manueline style, Portugal's mix of late Gothic and Renaissance, carved with armillary spheres and royal arms. UNESCO listed it, with Belém Tower, in 1983.

The two-storey cloister is the heart of the visit, and Fernando Pessoa's tomb lies in its west wing. Next door, the Church of Santa Maria rests its single vault on slender octagonal pillars and holds the tombs of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões in its lower choir.
