Nazaré's beach town sits below the Sítio, the highest point of the promontory, linked to it since 28 July 1889 by a funicular. From the Miradouro do Suberco, about 110 metres up, the view takes in the whole bay. By tradition, the Ermida da Memória dates from 1182, when the Virgin saved Dom Fuas Roupinho from riding over the cliff.
North of the headland, the Nazaré Canyon, about 230 km long and up to 5,000 metres deep, builds the giant waves of Praia do Norte. The municipality gives the season as October to March, and the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, ordered by King Sebastian in 1577, is the main place to watch them.
