About this experience
Three sides of central Portugal in a day: the Sanctuary of Fátima, the fishing town of Nazaré on its cliff above the Atlantic, and the walled village of Óbidos, in a group of at most eight.
- Visit the Chapel of the Apparitions and the two basilicas of Fátima
- Look over Nazaré's bay from the Sítio, about 110 metres up
- Watch for the giant waves of Praia do Norte, from October to March
- Walk through the tiled Porta da Vila into walled Óbidos

- Times
- Meet at 8:15 for an 8:30 start at Restauradores; back in central Lisbon at about 18:30.
- Fátima
- Prayer areas ask for respect and silence; Mass may be under way. The 12th–13th of each month from May to October are pilgrimage days and very busy.
- Nazaré
- The giant waves come from about October to March and depend on the swell: they are never guaranteed. Fort entry (€3) is extra.
- Ages
- Children 4–11 at the child price; under-4s travel in a child seat for €15.
The story
Between May and October 1917, three shepherd children reported apparitions of Our Lady at the Cova da Iria. The Chapel of the Apparitions was built on the spot in 1919; the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary followed (1928–1953), and the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity was dedicated in 2007.
In Nazaré, legend says the Virgin saved Dom Fuas Roupinho from riding over the cliff in 1182. Óbidos was King Dinis's wedding gift to Queen Isabel and stayed in the queens' hands until 1834; UNESCO named it a City of Literature in 2015.
