Things to do at Óbidos

About Óbidos

Óbidos sits inside a ring of medieval walls, with its castle, now a pousada, at the top of a maze of white houses. King Dinis gave the town to Queen Isabel as a wedding gift, and it stayed part of the queens' dowry until 1834.

Visitors enter through the Porta da Vila, lined with blue-and-white tiles of about 1740–1750 showing the Passion of Christ. The walls can be walked for more than a kilometre. Try the local ginjinha, a sour-cherry liqueur, best in a small chocolate cup. UNESCO named Óbidos a City of Literature in 2015.

Know before you go

  • Take care on the wall walk, especially with children
  • The castle is a hotel (pousada), not a museum
