Designed by Cambridge Seven Associates under Peter Chermayeff, the Oceanário was the Oceans Pavilion of Expo '98 and opened to the public for good in October 1998. Its central tank holds about 5 million litres and stands for the global ocean, with four habitats around it: the North Atlantic, the tropical Indian Ocean, the Antarctic coast and the Pacific kelp forests.
Look for the sea otters in the Pacific habitat, the Magellanic penguins of the Antarctic habitat, rebuilt and reopened in 2025, and the ocean sunfish, the largest bony fish. The Sea Building, added in 2011, has a tiled façade that looks like fish scales.
