About Quinta da Regaleira

The estate was built in the late 1800s for António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro by the Italian architect and set designer Luigi Manini, an eclectic mix of Manueline, Renaissance, medieval and classical styles. It is part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra that UNESCO listed in 1995.

Visitors walk down the Initiation Well, a spiral stair sunk into the hill, and follow the tunnels from its foot to the Eastern Grotto. Above ground, the gardens lead to the chapel and the palace, whose main floor is open.
