Between May and October 1917, three shepherd children, Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, reported apparitions of Our Lady at the Cova da Iria. The Chapel of the Apparitions was built on the spot in 1919, and its statue stands where the holm oak tree grew.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary was begun in 1928 and dedicated in 1953; the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, dedicated in 2007, seats 8,633. On the 12th and 13th of every month from May to October, international pilgrimages fill the sanctuary, the biggest in May and October.
