About Stonehenge

The first monument here was a circular ditch and bank dug around 3000 BC. The great sarsen circle and trilithons went up around 2500 BC, aligned on the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. The smaller bluestones came about 150 miles from the Preseli Hills in west Wales, and research published in 2024 traced the Altar Stone to north-east Scotland.

A shuttle links the visitor centre, with its exhibition and reconstructed Neolithic houses, to the stones 1.5 miles away. You walk a path around the circle; the stones are roped off.
