About Windsor Castle

William the Conqueror chose this chalk ridge above the Thames for a fortress around 1070, and monarchs have lived here ever since. It is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, and still a working royal palace.

The State Apartments are hung with works from the Royal Collection, restored in places after the fire of 1992. Queen Mary's Dolls' House has working lights and lifts in miniature. St George's Chapel, scene of many royal weddings, is the resting place of monarchs including Henry VIII, Charles I and Queen Elizabeth II.
