The stadium opened in December 1947 and took the name of club president Santiago Bernabéu in 1955. From 2019 it was rebuilt around the old bowl, with a skin of stainless-steel ribbons, a retractable roof and a pitch that splits into trays and slides into an underground greenhouse, so the ground can host concerts as well as football.
The Tour Bernabéu is the club's official self-guided visit. It takes in an interactive museum lined with trophies, a panoramic viewpoint over the bowl and, on days without a match, the dressing rooms and the team benches beside the pitch.
