How it works. Your ticket is valid all day. Board at any stop, get off where you like and catch a later bus. Two circular routes start beside the Prado, near Plaza de Neptuno: the historic route takes about 80–90 minutes if you stay on board, the modern route about an hour. Buses come every 15–40 minutes, depending on the route and the season.
Historic Madrid. The first route runs up Gran Vía, built between 1910 and 1931, to Plaza de España and the Temple of Debod, a 2nd-century BC Egyptian temple given to Spain and rebuilt here in 1972. It then loops round past the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral, Puerta de Toledo and Plaza Mayor, returning through the Barrio de las Letras, where Cervantes and Lope de Vega once lived.
Modern Madrid. The second route heads north from Cibeles up the Paseo de la Castellana, past Plaza de Colón and the Natural History Museum, to the Santiago Bernabéu, home of Real Madrid. It comes back through the Salamanca district along Calle de Serrano and round the Puerta de Alcalá, at the edge of the Retiro park.
Tips. Ride a full loop first to get your bearings, then use the bus as transport. The top deck has the views, so bring a hat in summer and a layer in winter. Buses run from about 09:30 to early evening, with longer hours in summer; check the last departure at your stop.
