About Castello Sforzesco
Francesco Sforza began rebuilding a Visconti fortress here in 1450, and his successors turned it into a Renaissance court where Leonardo da Vinci worked. Today its courtyards are a free shortcut between the city centre and Parco Sempione, and its halls hold the city's civic collections.
The star is Michelangelo's Rondanini Pietà, the marble he was still carving days before his death in 1564, shown in its own museum in the former Spanish Hospital. Elsewhere you'll find Mantegna's Trivulzio Madonna, an Egyptian collection, armour, furniture and rooms of historic musical instruments.
Know before you go
- The museums close on Mondays; the courtyards stay open and free.
- Leonardo's Sala delle Asse is in the final phase of restoration and may not be on view.
- The museums spread across several wings and floors, so expect plenty of walking.
- One ticket covers all the castle museums for the day.
