About Lake Como

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y, and Bellagio sits right where its branches meet: a town of stepped lanes on the tip of a wooded promontory. Across the water, Varenna stacks pastel houses above a small harbour, with a lakeside walkway and the gardens of Villa Monastero along the shore.

Public ferries link the central villages in 15 to 20 minutes, which makes hopping between them part of the fun. Spring and early autumn bring mild weather and gardens in flower, while winter is quieter, with fewer boats and some villas closed.

Know before you go

  • Ferry timetables are reduced outside summer, from 5 October 2026.
  • Bellagio's lanes are steep, stepped and cobbled; wear comfortable shoes.
  • Villa Melzi's gardens in Bellagio close for the winter at the end of October.
  • At busy times, allow 20 minutes at the ferry ticket office.
